Taxpayers can cite the coronavirus pandemic as a reason to get their letter rulings moved to the front of the IRS’s queue.
Letter rulings are written statements from the IRS that interpret and apply tax laws to a specific set of facts at the request of a taxpayer.
Normally, the agency processes the requests in the order that they were received. But in guidance issued at the beginning of 2020, the IRS said taxpayers with a “compelling need” can have their requests expedited.
