Pressure Grows on BBVA’s Inner Circle in Spying Scandal Case

A spying scandal involving Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria SA edged closer to the lender’s inner circle this week.

A Spanish judge on Thursday placed former BBVA Chairman Francisco Gonzalez under formal investigation for bribery and improper disclosure and called him to testify on Nov. 18, according to a person with knowledge of the matter. The judge also started formal probes against Juan Asua, senior adviser to current BBVA Chairman Carlos Torres, and Eduardo Arbizu, who was removed in July as head of regulation and internal control following an internal probe by the bank.
