Florida Governor Signs E-Verify Mandate for State Contractors

A new Florida law will require employers to check the immigration status of new hires, in some cases mandating use of the federal E-Verify system.

The measure (SB 664) will require companies that contract with a state or local government entity and those that receive state economic development incentives to use E-Verify, after Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) signed the bill into law Tuesday. Other companies can choose between using E-Verify or requesting the same documentation required by the federal Form I-9—a provision that generally mirrors what’s already required by federal law.
