EU Parliament Clarifies Anti-Fraud E-Commerce Measures

The European Parliament approved rules Nov. 14 that would explain how online marketplaces should implement anti-fraud VAT measures.

The rules would supplement a value-added tax e-commerce directive that was approved in 2017 and takes effect in 2021.

  • The new rules would specify:
    • What kind of sales records e-commerce platforms will have to keep to assist local authorities calculate the VAT due;
    • When a platform is considered to have played a role in a sale and is thereby responsible for ensuring VAT is collected;
