HILL TAX BRIEFING: IRS Pledges More Fixes for Free File Program

The IRS agreed to make additional changes to its free-filing agreement with tax preparation companies, the latest step taken by the agency and tax prep firms after months of scrutiny.

The IRS Free File program is a partnership between private tax software companies to offer free online tax preparation and electronic filing to individuals with incomes under $69,000. But last spring the program came under fire after ProPublica reported that some participants, like H&R Block Inc. and Intuit Inc., were steering individuals away from free options to paid products.
