New Zealand to be Mission Control for Climate Change Satellite

New Zealand will host the control center for a new satellite designed to collect data on methane emissions, adding to the South Pacific nation’s developing role in the global space industry.

The satellite is designed to locate and measure methane from human sources worldwide and is due to launch in 2022, Science Minister Megan Woods said in a statement Wednesday in Wellington. The government will invest NZ$26 million ($17 million) into a partnership with the New York-based Environmental Defense Fund that is leading the MethaneSAT project, she said.
