Canada proposed regulations to establish a new marine protected area in the Arctic that would provide critical habitat for Arctic char, cod, beluga whales, polar bears, seals and sea birds. Creation of the 2,361-square-kilometer Anguniaqvia Niqiqyuam Marine Protected Area under Canada’s Oceans Act would help preserve the area’s important biological diversity, habitat and ecosystem, Fisheries and Oceans Canada said in a regulatory impact analysis accompanying the draft regulations in the June 25 Canada Gazette, Part I.
