Canadian Revamp of Indigenous Rights Would Have Energy Effects

Energy and mining companies seeking to build new projects in Canada could face a new legal framework as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau ambitiously pledged to overhaul all of the federal government’s interactions with indigenous peoples.

Speaking in the House of Commons Feb. 14, Trudeau announced the creation of a “recognition and implementation of indigenous rights framework” that would seek to unravel the adversarial attitude Ottawa has often taken since Canada formally recognized that precolonial societies had a right to self-determination in 1982.
