BASF SE, Clariant International Ltd., Henkel AG & Co. and other chemical companies face stricter scrutiny under the European Union’s REACH law as the bloc pledged to get tough on obligations to provide chemical safety information.

In a June 24 plan published jointly with the European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) said REACH would be amended to increase the number of checks on substance information provided by companies.

More cross-checking would be done to discover when companies provide different information on the same substances for different REACH processes, it said.
