EPA Proposes Buying Out Arsenic-Tainted N.Y. Homes in Rare Move

The EPA is looking to take the rare step of buying out and relocating residents living next to a former arsenic mine in Kent, N.Y., the agency announced Wednesday.

At the Arsenic Mines Superfund site near the New York-Connecticut border, which includes 10 residential properties, the Environmental Protection Agency is proposing to demolish homes once they are vacated.

Over the agency’s history, residents have been evacuated from highly contaminated areas fewer than two dozen times, according to a former agency official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
