EPA Says It Won’t Delay Alaska Pebble Mine Permitting Process

The EPA has signaled support for the massive Pebble Mine planned in southern Alaska, boosting the mine’s chances of securing its sought-after Clean Water Act permit.

In a letter issued late on Thursday, the Environmental Protection Agency said the Army Corps of Engineers’ environmental review of the project is going smoothly.

The agency faced a Thursday deadline to elevate its concerns about the mine’s water impacts, which could have led to a decision to veto the project. But the letter indicated that the EPA has no plans to do so.
