EU Electricity, Heavy Industry See 4% Drop in Carbon Emissions

European policies designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from industrial facilities and power plants appeared to be having an effect, as emissions fell nearly 4% in 2018 compared to the previous year.

Electricity producers in particular contributed to the drop, with their emissions dropping 4.1%, according to verified 2018 data from the European Union’s emissions trading system.

Meanwhile, steelmakers, cement factories, and other industrial facilities covered by the ETS reduced their emissions by 0.7%, while emissions from aviation rose by 3.9%, according to the data published June 4.
