EU Recycling Less Plastic Than Countries Reported, Audit Finds

The European Union isn’t as good as it thinks it is when it comes to recycling plastic packaging waste, the European Court of Auditors said Tuesday.

Official data from EU member countries show a 41% bloc-wide average recycling rate for plastic packaging, but the real rate is likely to be about 30%, the auditors said in a new report.

The shortfall means the bloc will have to work much harder to reach plastic packaging recycling rates of 50% by 2025, and 55% by 2030, which are binding goals written into EU law, the auditors said.
