Gabon to Protect Quarter of Offshore Waters as Marine Reserves

June 6, 2017, 1:30 PM

Gabon President Ali Bongo created a network of 20 protected offshore marine reserves covering about 26 percent of the central African nation’s territorial waters.

The network comprises nine parks for marine conservation and 11 reserves that will benefit fisheries, Bongo said at a United Nations conference in New York late June 5, according to a statement from his office.

West and Central African countries are struggling to protect their coastal waters from illegal fishing, pollution and piracy. Bongo is leading efforts to protect the country’s vast tropical forests and waters.
