Industry Fights First Superfund Listing Based on Toxic Vapors (1)

The EPA shouldn’t make a Mississippi property potentially contaminated by toxic vapors the first site placed on the Superfund list because of those vapors, the company operating there and an industry association said.

Ice Industries, which operates a stamping, welding, and assembly operation at the site in Grenada, Miss., told the Environmental Protection Agency that its assessment of contamination there isn’t thorough enough to warrant the site’s placement on the National Priorities List. The EPA says vapor intrusion contamination at the site is severe enough to make an assessment of soil, water, or groundwater unnecessary.
