NOAA to List Whitetip Sharks as Overfished Following Lawsuit

The National Marine Fisheries Service will formally designate whitetip sharks as overfished and direct officials to develop recommendations to protect them, according to a notice filed in a Hawaii federal court.

The Conservation Council for Hawaii and individual Michael Nakachi alleged in their lawsuit filed in April that the agency, also known as NOAA Fisheries, failed to notify the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council of the shark’s overfished status. The council manages the Pacific population of the sharks, which have declined due to bycatch and demand for their fins, according to the lawsuit.
