Poland to Impose Retail Tax Before EU Court’s Final Judgment

Poland will start collecting a disputed retail tax from next January, choosing not to wait for the EU’s top court to have final say on the matter, according to the Polish finance ministry.

Should the court end up ruling against the tax—which Poland doesn’t expect—any collected proceeds will be refunded, a spokesperson for the ministry said in an email.

The tax would have retailers pay 0.8% on monthly turnover between more than 17 Polish million zloty ($4.6 million) and 187 million zloty, and 1.4% on turnover totaling more than 187 million zloty. Monthly turnover of up to 17 million zloty...
