Seeking Indigenous Consent May Slow Mine, Energy Projects

Energy and mining projects in Canada could become more difficult if Ottawa pushes forward with plans to require the consent of affected indigenous populations first, the country’s top opposition politician warned.

The Supreme Court of Canada has already ordered companies and governments to consult with indigenous communities when planning projects that could affect their territory, but Prime Minister Justin Trudeau‘s government wants to go further by requiring companies to get indigenous populations’ consent before moving forward.

That’s injecting a lot more uncertainty, Conservative Party Leader Andrew Scheer said March 5 at a mining conference.
