Joseph Balash, the Interior Department official in charge of opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas leasing, is resigning, Interior Secretary David Bernhardt announced via Twitter on Aug. 20.
Bernhardt didn’t explain in his tweet why Balash, the assistant secretary for land and minerals management, is resigning.
Balash said in his resignation letter that he plans to step down Aug. 30, but didn’t give a reason for his departure. Balash’s office didn’t respond to a request for comment.
