Trophy Hunting a Major Threat to Wildlife, Ecosystems in Africa

Hunting for trophies has become a major threat to wildlife and ecology in Sub-Saharan Africa, according to the International Fund for Animal Welfare and other conservationists that say the practice could drive some wild game species to extinction.

According to Azzedine Downes, the chief executive officer of the International Fund for Animal Welfare, the African elephant, leopard, and the lion are among the top six most trophy hunted wildlife species globally.

“In this case, African lions have had the strongest statistically significant increase of trophy hunting trade in the last 10 years,” said Downes.
