Beauty Products Come Under House Scrutiny in Bid to Boost FDA

A House health panel plans to take the first public step toward giving the federal government power to recall cosmetics and ban certain ingredients for beauty products.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee health panel will take up to bills Wednesday, one draft measure sponsored by committee Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-N.J.) and another (H.R. 4296) by Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.). Together the measures represent the first major steps to altering how the Food and Drug Administration oversees the $80 billion industry in almost a century.
