More Medicaid Eligibility Checks Hamper Enrollment, Advisers Warn

Medicaid enrollment could decline if the Trump administration allows states to impose more frequent eligibility determinations for program beneficiaries, an advisory panel warned Friday.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is expected to issue a proposed rule in April that would require states to tighten their eligibility determination processes for Medicaid and its companion Children’s Health Insurance Program, according to the Medicaid and CHIP Payment and Access Commission.

The CMS didn’t respond to a request to confirm whether a proposal is forthcoming. But the Trump administration has encouraged states to check beneficiaries’ eligibility more than the once a year...
