Patient Data, Cyber Threats, Surprise Billing Top OCR To-Do List

A patient’s right to their data, cybersecurity threats including ransomware, and unexpected medical billing are at the top of HHS’ priority list for 2020, an official said Nov. 14.

The Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights plans to spend 2020 working on rules under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act tackling those issues, Timothy Noonan, the OCR’s deputy director for health information privacy, said.

The rules come as the Trump administration tries to address lengthening wait times for patients to access their data, increasing incidences of medical hacking, and growing concerns about surprise medical costs....
