Surgeon to Pay $4.4 Million to Resolve Kickback Scheme Claims

A neurosurgeon and his two medical device companies will pay $4.4 million to settle False Claims Act allegations relating to illegal payments to induce use of certain medical devices in violation of the Anti-Kickback Statute, as well as claims for medically unnecessary surgeries, the Justice Department said Monday.

The settlement resolves allegations that Wilson Asfora improperly sought reimbursement from federal health-care programs while soliciting remuneration for his companies, Medical Designs LLC and Sicage LLC, the DOJ said in an announcement.
