U.S. Can’t Charge States Billions in Obamacare Fees

The U.S. government can’t collect $13 billion to $15 billion from states after a federal court ruled it wasn’t entitled to impose a “health insurance provider” fee on states administering Medicaid and children’s health insurance programs.

The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas Aug. 21 ruled in favor of six states that sued the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Internal Revenue Service, finding that the Affordable Care Act explicitly prohibits the government from imposing a health insurance provider fee on states.
