Big box retailers, credit card companies, online retail platforms, and others could be hit with a new tax if they collect consumer data of New York residents and sell them for profit.
State Sen. Liz Krueger, chair of the New York Senate Finance Committee, on Monday introduced a bill (S4959) that would apply an excise tax on collection of consumer data used and analyzed by companies for targeted advertising and other economic benefits.
