Fatal Crane Collapse in Seattle Linked to Contractors’ Errors

An investigation into the fatal collapse of a construction crane in downtown Seattle in April concluded it fell because companies didn’t follow correct procedures for dismantling it, Washington state authorities said Oct. 17.

Three companies involved with taking apart the crane face worker safety fines totaling $107,000, according to Washington’s Division of Occupational Safety and Health. The April 27 collapse took the lives of two workers and two people whose cars were struck by falling debris.

After the accident, state authorities began asking contractors for advance notice of when cranes are erected or taken apart and issued a hazard alert...
