Fitbit Counters Philips Patent Suits With Infringement Claims

Fitbit Inc. brought patent infringement claims against Koninklijke Philips NV in San Francisco federal court Wednesday, following earlier Philips health-tracking patent lawsuits against Fitbit in district court and at the International Trade Commission.

Philips has “apparently expended significant resources to analyze Fitbit’s products” and sued to “end Philips’s free-riding on Fitbit’s patented technology,” the complaint says.

Fitbit accused Philips of infringing U.S. Patent No. 7,145,462, covering an automated monitoring and response system that can generate an emergency alert message and provide supplemental information to a responder. Fitbit says Philips’ Lifeline system infringes the patent.
